In the Old Testament (Dan. 10; 12), Michael is called the leader of the
ranks of angels and the protector of the people. In the New Testament (Rev.
12:7-9), Michael and his angels fight a dragon–symbol of evil–and hurl him
and his followers from heaven. Because of these and other references and
associations, Michael has become the patron of soldiers and policemen and a
figure who is appealed to for protection of individuals. While he is the
patron of soldiers in general, he is more specifically also appealed to as
