Meet St. Augustine of Hippo!

St. Augustine of Hippo (August 28th)

Patron of: brewers, printers, theologians, sore eyes

You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.

-St. Augustine of Hippo

St. Augustine of Hippo is considered to be one of the most famous Doctors of the Church. His works are some of the most important pieces of Christian literature. He lived his early life as a pagan, but he had a very saintly mother (St. Monica) that never stopped praying for his conversion. St. Augustine became a priest, and then a bishop. He is a great example of sinner-turned-saint; no matter what you've done in your life, if St. Augustine can become a saint, so can you!

Teach your children about forgiveness and conversion! Introduce the story of St. Augustine using the educational insert in the box. Encourage children to consider what it means to make a choice to do better and how God will support and help us. Great for opening discussions about making mistakes but getting back on the right path, courage to admit when you've done something wrong, acceptance of God's forgiveness and grace, and the importance of self-control. St. Augustine is a great way to discuss the idea that people can go on to do great things for God even if they haven't always made good decisions. With God, we believe there is hope for everyone to repent and live a good (even amazing!) life.
